Eyelash Extensions Aftercare Instructions: Swim, Makeup, Shedding & Skincare

Clear, expert aftercare guidance from Lashes In Style: when you can swim, whether mascara or eyeliner is okay, how to handle seasonal shedding, and the best way to use eye creams while protecting lash retention.

Eyelash extensions have been around for years, and at Lashes In Style we make aftercare simple. Follow the tips below to maximise lash retention, comfort, and that freshly-done look. If you ever have questions, our stylists are happy to help.

Can I use a swimming pool straight after treatment?

Keep your extensions dry for the first 24 hours. Fresh adhesive can soften with water or steam, and the vapours may cause mild stinging or reduced retention. After 24 hours, swimming is fine—just rinse with fresh water afterwards and cleanse gently with a lash-safe shampoo.

Can I still use mascara?

Extensions are a mascara replacement, so we recommend avoiding mascara altogether. It creates buildup that is hard to remove and can pull out extensions during cleansing. If you must, never use waterproof formulas and apply only to tips—then cleanse thoroughly with a lash-safe cleanser.

Eyeliners — can you or can you not?

You can wear eyeliner as long as it’s water-based (not waterproof) and fully removed each night. Avoid clogging the space between lashes (upper waterline). Use oil-free removers and cleanse the lash line so residue doesn’t build up on extensions.

Is taking breaks essential?

Extensions are safe when applied correctly. However, if your natural lashes appear shorter or finer, consider a short break. During breaks, use a lash growth serum and, optionally, a tiny amount of castor oil applied to lashes (avoid eye contact to prevent blurred vision). Your stylist can advise a routine tailored to you.

My lashes are shedding more than usual — what should I do?

Losing around 5 natural lashes per day is normal. In late winter/early spring (Feb–Mar) and sometimes autumn, many clients notice increased shedding due to seasonal hormone shifts and changes in daylight exposure. This is temporary—new lashes grow in quickly and your cycle normalises within a few weeks. Keep up with gentle cleansing and book infills a little sooner if needed.

Can I still use my eye creams or serums?

Yes—just keep oily or rich products away from the lash line. Most clients don’t see an impact on retention, but in rare cases some formulas can loosen adhesive. If eye care is part of your routine, apply sparingly and avoid direct contact with the extensions. Oil-free options around the eyes are the safest choice.
